Squarespace Acquires Google Domains: Should You Switch Your Domain Provider?

In June 2023, Squarespace successfully purchased Google Domains, acquiring about 10 million customer domains. Once regulatory approvals are obtained, current customers with Google domains will then be managed and owned by Squarespace. Although the two industry giants are working together to ensure a seamless transition, there are still quite a few questions.

The main question on everyone’s mind is, should I find another domain provider or just roll with the switch? Ultimately, the decision to stay or switch should be based on what works best for you and your website needs. Other factors to consider are pricing, ease of use, customer support and additional features such as email hosting. While it may not be necessary for everyone, we do advise you to at least compare the other options available to ensure you are getting the best results for your business.

Pricing

As of June 2023, Squarespace advises that customers will get the same renewal prices that they have with Google for the next 12 months, but the information they have provided at this point regarding prices is limited. Will prices increase after the 12 months? Decrease? We do know at this point, you are looking at around $20/month for Squarespace hosting, compared to Google’s $6-$12/month rate.
