Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress? The Battle of the Website Builders

There are no shortages of opinions when it comes to which website builder is best. Here, we are going to break down Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress to help you make a more informed decision for your brand! We’ll go through the pros and cons of each. We do not get incentives for any of these platforms, so the information is unbiased! Another thing to note, Wix and Squarespace are website builders, whereas WordPress is a content management system (CMS).

Ease of Use

Wix

If you don’t have a lot of time, experience, or patience, Wix is your builder. They have a great drag-and-drop feature plus templates that allow you to create your website with minimal design effort. They are fairly easy to set up and offer various plans depending on what you need and the only one that offers a free (basic, Wix-branded) site.

Squarespace

For those looking for a little more control with minimal coding knowledge, Squarespace is for you. Squarespace, like Wix, is a templated, drag-and-drop site, perfect for e-commerce. It allows you to set up your online store quickly as well as convenient inventory management and shipping options.

WordPress

Looking for unlimited capabilities? Then WordPress is for you. Although it is the least user-friendly of the three, it has added themes and elements that help those that are “less-technical”. Offering an intuitive design and limitless customization options, it’s no wonder WordPress is behind over half of the world’s websites.

Pricing (hosting, domain name)

Wix

Wix does offer a free version that includes a Wix-branded domain name, ads, which is best for building a test site. Their Light plan starts a $16*, but if you want (basic) e-commerce, you’ll need the Core plan coming in at $27*. It does include a free domain name for 1 year or the ability to use your existing domain.

Squarespace

While Squarespace doesn’t have a free version, their cheapest plan is also $16*. The Personal plan includes mobile optimization as well as a free domain for a year. The Business plan, is only $23*, includes e-commerce and a professional email from Google for a year.

WordPress

WordPress also offers a free version that offers unlimited pages and unrestricted bandwidth, but no free domain included. Their cheapest plan is the Personal plan, coming in at $4. But again, if you want an e-commerce option, you’ll need the Business plan, which falls in between Wix and Squarespace at a price point of $25/month*. WordPress also requires you to have your own hosting platform such as Siteground, HostGator, etc.

*Prices are calculated based on annual rates. Monthly rates will differ.

Design

Wix

With over 700 templates to choose from, there is no shortage of finding one that is right for you. The only question is, “Do you have the time to sort through them?” The drag-and-drop method allows you to place whatever elements you want wherever you want on the page. Wix has added Wix ADI to help build your website. You just answer a few questions and you’re done.

Squarespace

Over the past few years, Squarespace has really stepped its game up! It doesn’t have nearly as many templates as Wix, but all of their templates are beautiful and sleek. They allow some customization, but not enough to clutter the template design like you are able to with Wix. Squarespace employs the drag-and-drop feature, just on a more structured level.

WordPress

By far the most customizable, the only limitations are in your mind! Depending on your level of tech knowledge, custom code can really take your website to the next level. Plus, most of the plugins that allow you to enhance your site are free.

Support

Wix

Each paid plan offers 24/7 phone support. The Business Elite and Enterprise plans offer VIP phone support and a “skip the line” option. Wix also offers live chat Monday through Friday. Click here chat availability hours in your state or country.

Squarespace

Squarespace boasts 24/7 customer support via email or 24/7 live chat available on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for each plan. Live chat is available Monday through Friday.

WordPress

Although their free and Personal plans do not have support availability, the Premium plans and above offer both live chat and email support. WordPress also has an incredible forum filled with FAQs and guides to assist you.

Features/Functionality

Wix

In addition to shipping, Wix allows you to accept sales in person with the Wix Point of Sale System. Wix also has mobile capabilities, allowing you to update your site on the go. Also included is the Wix App Market, allowing you to download add-ons and apps to enhance your website. Some of these are free, some of them paid. Although you are able to use the developer mode and custom code some of the features on your Wix site, if the element was not designed by Wix, it will not show.

Squarespace

Even though Squarespace does not have nearly as many apps on its store as Wix or WordPress, the apps it does have are streamlined to keep your website’s design integrity. Also included is the Squarespace Point of Sale System, an app that, when used with a Square card reader, allows you to take your sales offline and make them in person.

WordPress

With millions of integrations and plugins, you can practically do as you please. And because WordPress is used mainly by developers, updates and support are readily available. Whatever you need in WordPress, we are sure, there’s an app for that!

Conclusion

Choosing a website builder is more about you, your capabilities, and your time than anything else. Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress each have their own pros and cons. If you are still on the fence, try each of them out, or consider talking to a web developer. For further help, contact our Quartz and Clay team!
